Below you can find a self-made worksheet in which pupils can learn and see the difference between the past simple and past continuous.

The overall theme of the worksheet is Sherlock Holmes. Pupils get to solve a murder after completing the first exercise.
On the back of  the worksheet a word search can be found for pupils who finish early. The words are related to the sentences in exercise 1.

This worksheet it aimed at learners around CEFR A1/A2 level.
